North East Region
The North-East Region of Singapore is one of the five regions in the city-state. The region is the most densely populated and has the highest population among the five, with Sengkang being its most populous town as of 2020 and Seletar as the regional centre. Comprising 13,810 hectares, it includes seven planning areas and is largely a residential region with 217,120 homes. Housing largely consists of high-density HDB public housing estates, however private housing is also present in the region. As its name implies, it is located in the north-eastern part of Singapore.

The town offers a wide array of facilities for a ‘live, work, play, and learn’ environment. A distinctive
landmark in Ang Mo Kio is the circular point block at the entrance of the town from Upper Thomson
Road. Until today, the block remains the only HDB block with this distinctive circular design.

“Hougang” is the romanised Mandarin name for “Au Kang”, a Fujian and Chaozhou term meaning “the
end of the river”. Residents of Hougang were one of the first in Singapore to benefit from a revised
precinct concept designed by the HDB to give residents more opportunities for greater interaction.

During the post-World War II years to the 1960s, Serangoon was home to a mix of old kampung
settlements, villages, rubber plantations, and other agricultural activities. Today, Serangoon is a mature
housing estate. The area was enlivened when Nex, a shopping mall integrated with a bus interchange,
and the Serangoon Circle Line station were completed in 2010.
